Description:
I had a commission to make an anime figure, but the customer wanted me to do it in a cubist style. He said he wanted to provide a challenge in creating a unique request. My father had just given me a book with Picasso's work in it, and I wasn't sure about the whole cubist thing since it was never a style that really appealed to me. I like art to be beautiful, and often these paintings seemed ugly, but when I got into actually doing this painting, I really enjoyed it. I was tempted to make her even more horrific since this figure still looks kind of cute, but it wasn't about beauty, it was about twisting things and looking at something from several different perspectives at the same time. I got into doing the shapes and shading on her shirt and in her hair. I wanted to twist it even more and make her horrible. I really wanted to strike back at all the cutesy images of women by taking one and really warping it out into something scary. I may do more cubist paintings.
